About 30 years ago, the need for computer education was not really an issue. Those who were learning about them knew a computer web was used for military and some educational applications. Since then, practically every six-year-old has some basic understand of computers.
Today, computer education covers a wide range of opportunities from software development to teaching how to use the software. In between there are needs for maintenance and repair, networking and using personal computers. The need for understanding these aspects of computers has prompted the need for people to fill positions providing education.
Vic Laurie, who works as a volunteer teaching senior citizens the many uses of computers, also pushes the need to go beyond the current graphical interfaces of most programs and using command line prompts. His computer education classes explain why it’s important to know this basic, often ignored, aspect of computer operations.
Integrated technology has brought the computer to be more a part of a person’s life than any other high-tech development. Being able to program many home-based events, such as house thermostats as well as lighting and even turning on a coffee maker, all requires computer education to make it work.
There was a time, not long ago, when using computers was considered a task for so-called “geeks” and many shied away due to the misunderstand of how they worked. As more computer education became available, and programming made them easier and more efficient to use, more people found how useful they could be. Today they can be used for everything from ensuring the safe launch and return of space vehicles to storing recipes and the family photographs.
