Not everyone is cut out to be a distance learner. There are advantages and disadvantages to distance learning that need to be considered before signing up. Along with the desire to learn at your own pace, you have to have the equipment necessary to keep up with the classes. You should be prepared to have an up to date computer that can handle high speed internet, word processing software and internet capabilities. These might cost a little to get hooked up if you don’t already have them. Then you really need to examine why you want to try distance-learning courses over traditional schools.
A distance learner has to be independent. Sure many distant learning schools have instructors available for guidance you might not have that network of peers to draw from that you would if you attended a traditional school. On the other hand, with email and class work posted online you have the freedom of working on math, science and English when you want as long as you turn your assignments in on time. If you are self-motivated then this will probably work for you. Not only can you work faster than a traditional school but also some distant learning centers allow for slower working than that of a traditional school.
Before choosing distance learning as your school of choice, do a little homework first and find out what is available and at what cost. Many learning centers are not free. Still if you thrive by learning on your own and at your own pace then distance learning may be for you.
