Drivers Ed Classes
Driving safety is a goal of most drivers, and some insurance companies will offer a break on rates if the drivers have taken divers ed classes. Many states have different age requirement to obtain a driver license, sometimes younger if the driver has successfully completed divers ed classes.
Time was divers ed classes consisted of a teenager in the car with the licensed adult with the least fear and most patience. Rules of the road booklets aided their understanding of signs and basic rules and courtesies, but learning to steer the vehicle was left up to a relative.
With many parents too busy or too timid, divers ed classes began popping up in schools where a driving instructor was hired and at end of the school day would two or three on the road and teach them to drive. Success rate, measured by the number of people passing their license exam on the first try, improved under this method but soon, schools could no longer afford the added cost of insurance.
Divers ed classes are offered in some communities by companies operated by members of safety forces. The biggest benefit to this type school is the officers teaching the class can relate real-life examples into the classroom curriculum. For instance, a common courtesy taught in many divers ed classes is to dim your high beam lights when approaching another vehicle at night. Some may even recommend flashing high beams if the approaching driver fails to do so.
The officers explain that all this does is create two blinded drivers rapidly approaching other with nothing but a strip of paint on the road between them. Defensive driving is an important lesson in all divers ed classes.
