Educational software is a great tool that parents and teachers can use with children.  It helps introduce new learning concepts, as well as reinforces previously learned skills.  However, there are some things to consider when choosing educational software to ensure that your child will use and enjoy the program.  Before you buy education software, consider these tips so that your child will maximize their time spent working with the program.

First, check your computer system and the education software program’s recommended settings.  Not all computers are equal and there are many different systems.  Purchasing a program for Windows XP that was designed for a Macintosh is not going to work.  Likewise, make sure that you have all accessories and peripherals needed to use the program correctly.  Your program may require items such as a microphone and headset.  Make sue that you have all of the required tools and accessories before you let your child use the program. 

You may also want to read reviews and recommendations about an education software program before you purchase it.  This is a great way to find out what the program’s objectives are and to determine if you think it will be a suitable choice for your child.  However, never trust the recommendation so fully that you neglect to examine the program yourself.  You should also play the game or program with your child so you can get a feel for how your child is responding to the program.

The education software program should be fun and entertaining for your child. Event though the main purpose of the program is educational, no child will sit glued to a program if they aren’t having fun.  For your child to maximize his or her time using the program you will want to make sure that it has audio, graphics, video, and lots of interactivity.
