Assessments are designed so as to enhance logical reasoning and problem solving skills. But in order to achieve this, the first step to improved learning is aligning the curriculum with instructions and assessments.

What are Educational Assessments?

It can be defined as collection of data comprising of various aspects of a student’s performance and progress like his behavior, skills and knowledge. This gives the teacher a clear picture of what the student already knows and what needs to be thought and how it has to be thought to be effective.

Why Do We Need Educational Assessments?

They serve as important guidelines for implementing the required instructions and providing the right direction to the students. Using a collage of assessment tools helps to determine which instructional strategies are effective and which require modifications. Assessment also allows students to evaluate themselves and be self-sufficient learners.

What Are The Various Tools Of Assessment?

In order to implement the proper use of educational assessments as learning tools, the different methods of assessments used should fulfill certain criteria.

  1. The method should satisfy the real intended purpose of assessment and determine its influence on curriculum and instructions.
  2. Validity and reliability are the basic requirements of the educational assessment.
  3. Fairness is another important characteristic feature. No method should be biased on the basis of either gender, origin, religion or any other discriminating factor.
  4. It should be significant in the sense that it should address the required necessary content and skills.
  5. It should prove to be not only effective but also an efficient means of assessing learning.

What Are The Different Methods Of Assessment?

A wide range of options in educational assessments is available. They include strategies and solutions that are traditional as well as alternative. Alternative assessments are fast gaining popularity since they can be used with a wide range of knowledge and skills like declarative knowledge, application knowledge, conditional knowledge, procedural knowledge, problem solving, logical reasoning, documentation, interpretation and understanding.

What Are The Different Steps Of Assessment?

Assessment starts with baseline assessment, proceeds onto formative assessment and ends with summative assessment. The first stage establishes the existing knowledge, understanding and skills of the student and the second stage, helps with the necessary information to help the teacher to issue the appropriate instructions. While, the third and the last stage indicates the progress the student has made as a result of instructional program.
