Elementary Lesson Plans

Elementary school children are full of excitement and wonderment at the new world of learning and all of the new experiences available to them at school. Make the most of this enthusiasm about learning with some great Elementary Lesson Plans.

Giving elementary school kids a chance to express themselves can help them develop their creativity while learning new skills and can be incorporated into many parts of your elementary lesson plans. For language arts, have each grade level come up with their own short play, to be performed for schoolmates and parents. The older classes can write the play using words and sentence structures they are working on, while younger classes can perform a pre-written play that will help them practice their reading and word recognition skills. These plays can also incorporate social studies, history, literature, or any wide variety of subjects into your elementary lesson plans. Just choose plays that deal with topics you are teaching your class in other subjects.

Building math skills is an important part of elementary lesson plans. Take math from being a dreaded lesson to the most fun part of the day by helping the students learn through games and experience. Make a mini math lesson from planning the class field trip; have the students do the math to figure out the cost of the trip, the transportation needs, etc. Have the students create word problems for their classmates, featuring friends, teachers in the school, and famous movie and TV characters. For teaching about money, give each student a pretend “budget,” and let them “spend” money to earn play time, extra credit, the right to borrow a book from the classroom overnight, or other rewards. Allow them to “balance” their checkbooks. They’ll get plenty of addition and subtraction practice, plus, they’ll love feeling grown up by managing their own finances!
