Elementary School Teacher
The job of an elementary school teacher is to help the children develop their basic skills in reading, writing and arithmetic. However, they also introduce other essential topics to the children, which include sciences, foreign languages and social studies. A good elementary school teacher is capable of arousing a child's interest while encouraging him/her to gain more knowledge and become more self-confident.
What Does An Elementary School Teacher Do?
An elementary school teacher usually works with 20 to 30 children at one time. The teaching process takes place in two ways. At times, one single teacher teaches different subjects in one class and, in other cases, there are teachers who teach one particular subject in different classes. The challenge lies in how efficiently can teachers make a particular subject interesting for the children.
Elementary teachers deal with the students during the crucial formative years. This is a very critical phase because what the child learns at this stage stays with him for the rest of his life. The teacher who teaches at the school should know their subjects well and have a wide range of other essential skills.
What Should Elementary Teachers Know?
Elementary school teachers should be well aware of the stages of child-development and correctly read the social, emotional or learning problems in a child. They should be well acquainted with the ways of and be ready to:
- Support the development of a child within the classroom
- Settle disputes
- Provide special attention to the kids as and when needed
- Communicate with the parents and inform them about their child's progress/ regress both in educational and social spheres
All these above mentioned points equally emphasize the fact that an elementary school teacher also plays the part of a counselor, psychologist and disciplinarian.
Eligibility
An elementary school teacher should and should have a bachelor's degree, especially if you want to join a public school. Knowledge and training in early childhood development and other related subjects are also very essential. At times, it is not enough to have a degree and you may need to have a working experience under the strict supervision of a certified and experienced tutor.
It is also important for elementary school teachers to have a working license, which is usually granted by the respective State Boards; the license needs to be renewed each year.
