Instructional Development

There are two ways of defining instructional technology. In a familiar sense instructional technology is the media that was born out of the communication revolution that can be used for instructional purposes besides the textbooks, teachers or blackboard. If you try and define it in a manner beyond any particular device or medium, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a systematic way to design, carry out and evaluate the whole learning process and to teach in terms of certain objective based on communication and human learning.

Instructional development is like a systematic approach for designing, producing, evaluating and utilizing the complete systems of instruction, including the management pattern and all the other appropriate components. A major part of instructional development is the specification or design of learning resources and components of instructional system. It comprises of instructional designing, which is also a part of it.  There are several activities or goals that come under instructional development:

  • Writing of learning objective
  • Clearing of the copyright use
  • Putting together content and assessment with learning objectives
  • Analysis of student background and needs
  • Editing and organization of the course materials
  • Development of assessment techniques
  • Respecting the diverse styles of learning
  • Facilitation of classroom discussions

Need for instructional development:

It provides a framework to plan, develop and adapt to instructions that are based on the requirement of content and identifiable learner needs. The process of instructional development consists of:

- The special determining of needs and the establishment of goals and analysis of the audience

- Development, including creating content outline, reviewing of the existing materials, development and organizing of content and the selection and development of delivery methods and materials.

- Evaluation process that also includes the revision of objectives and goals, development of evaluation strategies and collection and analyzing of data.

- Revision in which you are supposed to develop and implement the revision plans.

If you want to shorten the process of instructional development, you can do it after considering the needs of the person who is learning, constraints that teachers and students face along with the requirements of the content.
