Learn How to Swim

Have you ever wanted to learn how to swim, but didn't know where to start? There are a number of options for you to choose from. You could do something as simple as asking a friend to teach you, or as involved as reading books before signing up with a personal instructor, however, the most common way to learn how to swim is simply by signing up for a group class at your local public pool. Most public pools offer a wide variety of classes for all different skill levels. Some pools use life guards as instructors, which may give a first time swimmer a little more piece of mind, however, all swimming instructors must be certified, and therefore will have the proper training in the event of an emergency.

The initial class will cover the basics of swimming. You'll be shown how to hold your breath, float on your back, tread water, and eventually how to move your arms and legs in a way that will propel you through the water. If you’re nervous, you may choose to wear a life jacket which they will provide for you. Once you learn the basics, your instructor may teach you more advanced techniques such as the breast stroke, the back stroke, and/or how to swim underwater. While, the fancier stuff isn't necessary to swim, you'll have mastered the basics by the end of your class.

It is a great idea to learn how to swim. Swimming is a wonderful form of low-impact exercise, and can be a very soothing and relaxing way to shed some unwanted pounds. Almost all gyms offer some form of water aerobics which don't normally require swimming skills, but it's always best to have them if you're going to be in the water. Once you learn how to swim you'll have the confidence to enjoy a beautiful day at the beach or to join your friends for a fun-filled, water park adventure. There really is no down side to learning how to swim. You and the people around you will be that much safer not having to worry about the possibility of an accident in the water.
