Lesson Plans

Lesson plans are like a worksheet for a lecture.  You can create an outline on the computer and fill in the specific information for each lesson you teach.  By creating lesson plans for each lecture, you as a teacher can rest assured that you are prepared for the class.  The lesson plans help you know what you will be teaching as well as what you will need to teach effectively.

When creating your lesson plan, you may want to ask yourself these questions:

  • What specifically do you want your students to know?
  • What should be students able to do after this lesson?
  • What skills or strategies should students gain from this lesson?
  • What important concepts and content should the students learn during this lesson?
  • What do your students want to know about this topic?
  • What questions will generate discussion among the students about this topic?
  • What questions should you ask to help students focus on the important aspects of the topic?
  • How assessment tools will you use to see if students have learned?
  • How can technology assist students in learning?
  • What conceptual difficulties might the students have?
  • How will students demonstrate the knowledge they have learned?

When creating your lesson plans, there are no set rules about what it should or should not contain.  However, it will be more useful if the lesson plan for each lecture is limited to one page.

Lesson plans are great resources for any teacher whether they are teaching preschool or college aged students.  With lesson plans, you can get yourself and your lecture organized, which benefits both you and the students.

One wonderful thing about lesson plans is teachers can share them with each other.  By looking at another teacher’s lesson plan, you may find things you have unintentionally left out of your class.  You may also see a structure for lesson plans that you prefer to the one you have been using.
