Master of Education
A master of education is a higher level degree that is used for qualified teachers who are advancing in their studies and/or advancing in their careers. In the United States, higher positions within schools, colleges and universities, such as dean, consultant, principal and vice-principal or any other educational administrative job require a minimum of a master’s degree certification. Other positions related to this included therapists, counselors and caseworkers, all of whom require a masters in education to obtain their licenses to practice. However, any positions in educational institutions above these like a school superintendant, requires a Ph.D.
The master of education is divided into 6 areas of study, including counseling, education administration, enrichment of academics, career/guidance counseling, affairs of students, post-secondary education, and Ed.D./or Ph.D. preparation.
A master of education degree in counseling educates future mental health counselors get their license. This involves some 90 hours of extra study.
A master of education in education administration teaches students the rudiments needed to become a principal. Lessons are given in community/building issues, faculty leadership skills, and education law.
Enrichment of academics studies in a master of education further educates current teachers in their own areas of study or to add an additional area to their teaching repertoire. These may include any core primary subjects, grades k-12, and/or any special educational training.
Career/guidance counseling studies for a master of education consists of social work topics, law and psychology. This prepares teachers for work as a school counselor.
Affairs of students/post-secondary education master’s studies include specifics regarding higher education administration /student affairs and/or colleges/universities.
A master of education preparation course for teachers wanting to continue forward to get their doctorate includes the study of more detailed educational topics and specialized research in the area they wish to focus on in their future doctorate. This section by far has the largest work load.
