Multicultural Education
Multicultural education cannot be taken for granted in today’s society. No longer is the assumption that all cultures must meld into one that is superior acceptable, hence, multicultural education has gained an approved standing in most communities.
Besides obvious benefits, multicultural education helps address problems of antagonism and aggression between differing peoples. Enrichment is attained through multicultural education. Multicultural education gives instruction that is culturally relevant to all and helps students achieve more academically. A better understanding of differing cultural and social behavior also is attained through multicultural education.
History shows much abuse in the way of oppression, discrimination and injustice to some, and multicultural education not only teaches this history, but also shows students how to use their own lives in a way that can improve weaknesses in our society.
Multicultural education can be beneficial in alleviating such problems of poverty by tackling the learning needs of children of diverse cultures. A better balance of society from the standpoint of Native Americans, people of color, and women can be greatly improved through multicultural society.
Nor is multicultural education something only for populations that are considered minority. Everyone can benefit from multicultural education. Multicultural education teaches us how the past can make a better future. All cultures can learn to respect, understand, and honor those who are different through multicultural education.
Multicultural education allows a better chance for each student, no matter what his or her race, sex or color to learn and reach their fullest potential through an equal opportunity at learning.
