Online teacher education is a new advancement in teaching that allows teachers to educate students via the Internet.  There are varied levels, including primary, secondary and post-secondary education.  These are further divided up into private, public, university/college, and open learning.

Post-secondary online teacher education is used for university, college and open learning students who wish to take the majority of their courses through distance learning.  Distance learning provides the students with the ability to remain outside the regular classroom most of the time, with the exception of any lectures and/or exams/tests they may have to take. 

All students using online teacher education use varied tools and methods to complete their studies.  Though the students may be issued with specific course books and other items, they will also receive virtual lessons, assignments and other information via a school’s/universities/college’s website.  They will communicate, and receive marked assignments and test/exam results via emails directly from their assigned teachers.  This allows students and teachers to have almost a one-on-one situation, whereby students and teachers can focus on their own particular needs.  Students are also able to communicate any concerns, ask questions and generally keep in touch with their teachers day and night without the need to meet face to face.

Online teacher education is vast becoming common place, especially at US universities and colleges, whereby students are no longer able to simply go to school, but have obligations to work, or have chosen to do part-time studies.  This type of education is cheaper than regular education for both the institutions that run the courses and for the students themselves.
