Science education is much more than experiments performed in petri dishes.  Communities feel the importance of science education and its impact as a whole.  The choices that every individual makes regarding science, health, and the environment impact other people on both a local and global level.  Therefore, it is imperative that science education is taught to all children in the elementary and secondary years. 

The focus of science education should instruct children in the proper care and use of the environment, nature, and health and safety issues.  By understanding science, children will grow into adults who will understand that the decisions that they make today will impact the future.  Whether it is looking for alternative fuel sources, protecting the Ozone layer, or developing strategies to conserve our natural resources science education is the key to unlocking the strategies that will make a better future for all citizens.

Science education also plays a vital role in addressing health issues as well as communicable diseases.  In the early elementary years, focus is placed on hygiene, nutrition, exercise, and safety.  While in the older years, issues such as drugs, alcohol, and reproduction are addresses.  These issues play an important factor in society and are a crucial part of adolescence.  Teaching teens the importance of health and safety can reduce future epidemics of sickness and communicable diseases spread through ignorance and lack of knowledge.

Science is everywhere and exposing children to the wonders of science from an early age will help develop their minds and increase their logic and reasoning skills.  Whether it is a brief discussion on gravity, or taking children to a science museum, answering their questions regarding science is important to their overall development.  Children are natural born scientists; they are curious by nature and have an inquisitive mind.  They want to know how things work and why the world functions as it does.  Always do your best to encourage your child’s inquisitiveness and take the time to answer their questions.
