Singing Lessons
Singing lessons do not have to be about the same old scales and notes anymore. With a little planning and imagination, you can produce great singing lessons in which you students will learn a lot, and have fun while doing it!
If your singing lessons are done in a group setting, split the class into smaller groups, and have each group come up with a silly song that incorporates the notes or scales you are working on in that lesson. They can then teach their songs to each other. If your singing lessons are solo classes, work together with your student to come up with such a song together.
For more advanced students, consider combining your singing lessons with another music class – a class taking guitar lessons, piano lessons, etc. Have the classes work together to produce a concert for their family and friends, with your students taking care of the vocals. The songs can be favorite songs of the students, or they can even write their own. This will help your students build up their confidence, and learn about projecting their voices over instruments and in different size rooms.
Instead of deciding yourself what songs you will work on in your singing lessons, allow your students to choose some of the songs they want to learn. If you classes are solo classes, having your student choose a song can be a treat for having completed all of their assigned practices or for some new and special accomplishment. For group singing lessons, the students can compete in different drills to be the one who gets to choose the “student choice” song of the week or month. This will help keep the students interested, while helping them get an idea of what notes and which style of music suit their voice best.
